Student on the Street: ICE, Schools and Churches

In the wake of President Trump revoking a 2011 policy that prohibited raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers at schools and churches, The Pacific Times asked students:

Are you affected by ICE targeting schools and churches?

Khy Haynes, Junior

“Honestly, I have no idea… I think it’s unfair because they are profiling everyone as an immigrant. The U.S. was practically made by immigrants. They shouldn’t deport people if they came here for a reason… I think we should change the rules.”

Kiranveer Cheema, Senior

“No, I’m not affected directly. This is because I am a U.S. citizen. It is frightening because it’s making schools an unsafe place.”

Sandiv Wijesiriwardane, Junior

“I’m not sure if ICE is targeting schools. It doesn’t really affect me because I’m a citizen, plus I’m pro-Trump.”

Elly Hernandez, Sophomore

“It’s not affecting me personally. However, I know it’s affecting others, and ICE coming into schools and churches is making the community unsafe.”

Arjun Singh, Senior

“I don’t think it’s right; I feel like schools and churches should be a safe place. We shouldn’t be affected like that.”

Jasmeet Cheema, Adriel Gantayat, De’Arynah Jackson, Mansehaj Kaur, Bryn Macias, Sophie Pham, Shreya Prabhu and Lakshya Sharma contributed to this report.
