Seniors Lead After ‘First Friday’ of the School Year

Seniors got the largest share of Pirate Points as NP3 High students participated in the first, First Friday competition of the 2021-22 school year on August 9.

The First Friday competition was made up of three pieces:

  • the loudest class of students as determined by decibel count;
  • the most creative class of students as determined by NP3 High judge and Principal Melissa Mori and Annie Jones; and
  • the class with the highest number of students who wore their class’s colors.

The sound of each grade was taken during advisory in the quad with two groups of advisories per grade. All noise was to be made without participants’ mouths and air horns.

Seniors won the sound piece of the competition and they participated in the morning session of advisory and they had a combined decibel count of 209.2.

The first group had a decibel count of 102.7 and included a speaker which played sounds, bells which were shook and pots and pans which were hit against each other.The second group had a decibel count of 106.5 and included speakers which played music, cans full of beans were shook and a siren.

Juniors who came in second with a combined decibel count of 197.8 and they were the first to head to the quad during the afternoon session of advisory.

The first group of juniors got a combined decibel count of 98.8 which included a speaker which played music, cans full of beans which were shaken, bowls and paint cans which were hit, as well as a belt was used.

The second group of juniors got a combined decibel count of 99 which included spinning ratchets and cans and bottles full of beans which were shaken.

Sophomores who participated following the juniors got a combined decibel count of 195.5 decibels and came in third place in the sound competition.

The first group of sophomores got a combined decibel count of 95.8 which was created using cowbells and pots, pans and wood which were hit against each other.

The second group of sophomores got a combined decibel count of 99.7 which was created using stomping, clapping, use of wood being hit against each other and shaking of cups full of beans.

Freshmen who were the last to participate got a combined decibel count of 188.1 decibels and finished in fourth place in the sound competition.

The first group of freshmen got a combined decibel count of 94.7 and the sound was created using hand clapping, baseball bats being hit together and cooking equipment being hit against each other.

The second group of freshmen got a combined decibel count of 93.4 and that sound was created using cowbells, baseball bats being hit against each other, sirens, speakers, maracas, sirens and various items being used as drums.

As for the creativity portion of the competition, juniors came in first as they carried a variety of posters, seniors came in second as every senior wore a crown, followed by juniors who carried a variety of posters, followed by freshmen who used baseball bats and sophomores came in last.

Student Government officers and Mori said they were impressed by Alejandro Chan-Artiga’s advisory class for their poster and stomping and clapping routine when coming out to the quad and Kellen Thompson’s advisory for having the most members who followed a theme of wearing something in which depicted a dinosaur.

Seniors also won the class color piece of the event as they had 100 percent of students who wore their class color, followed by freshmen who had 85 percent of students who wore their class’s color, sophomores came in third with 82 percent of students participating and juniors came in last with 77 percent of students who participated.

Seniors colors are black and gold, juniors are purple, sophomores have changed this school year from red to pink and freshmen are the color green.

Seniors are in first place with 275 Pirate Points, followed by juniors with 200 Pirate Points, freshmen with 150 Pirate Points and sophomores are in last with 125 Pirate Points in the first Pirate Point standings of the school year.
