Soles and Smiles is collecting closed-toe shoes for impoverished communities in Mexico and Honduras.
Shoes will be collected until March 15 in Peter Riehl’s and Dulce Hernandez’s classrooms, the high school library and the high school, middle school and elementary school offices.
“Everyone has a couple of old pairs of shoes laying around they may not use anymore and we hope that people can consider giving them to us for a good cause,” said Soles and Smiles co-leader Brodie Brown.
Soles and Smiles is an NP3 High club which supports Angels with Shoes by hosting shoe donation drives and fundraising money to be able to send shoes to impoverished communities in Mexico and Honduras.
This is the second year that Soles and Smiles is holding a shoe donation drive. Last year’s efforts collected shoe donations for impoverished communities in Guatemala.
“We hope to raise as many shoes as possible and to make an improvement on our turnout from last year to help as many people as possible,” said Brown.
Tennis shoes are the preferred type of shoe for donation. Shoes which are not closed-toe are not ideal as it is tough for them to be used in the landscape in which the communities are located, said Brown
“These families live near landfills so comfortable shoes are ideal,” said Brown.
Some of the recipients of previous shoe donations can be seen on the Angels with Shoes Instagram at @angels.withshoes.
