NP3’s Spring Sports Conditioning Club promotes physical health and fitness for all students, whether they are training for a sport, looking to stay active, or simply joining for fun.

The club started on Feb. 11 and meets after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday.

Currently, the club focuses on general physical fitness, with students divided into speed and strength groups to ensure personalized training that meets their individual needs. A typical session includes changing into workout gear, warmups, exercises and a cooldown.

Sagarika Kannan, a sophomore in the club, described the weekly schedule.

“On Mondays, we run intervals on the field, and on Wednesdays we do cardio practices,” Kannan said. “We don’t run on Wednesdays, just work out, and on Thursdays, you run long distances.”

“I joined Sports Conditioning because I did cross country, and I wanted to keep it up,” said Terran Obeng, a freshman. “And also because it’s a nice after-school activity.”

According to coach Conor Simpson, the club helps student-athletes prepare for the upcoming school year by improving their endurance and overall athletic performance.

“Students in cross country set goals to run up to four to five miles by the end of the season,” Simpson said. “While for students in Pirate Basketball Association, it’s to give their 100% for a full basketball game.”

Many students who are also involved in cross country and the Pirates Basketball Association (PBA) said the club is beneficial in building endurance and strength.

“It supports my goal by getting in running and core that I sometimes can’t do at the gym or at home because I am busy,” Obeng said.

Students participating in the club say the workouts have helped them develop new skills, including exercises they previously struggled with.

“There were these practices like lifts and planks that I couldn’t do,” Kannan said. “But now that I’ve been practicing more, I can do them, and it helps my running and future too.”
