The pirate point competition is close this year with juniors currently in the lead and seniors trailing behind by 300 points.

With the current standings, it is not possible for any grade level to beat the juniors in first place.

Pirate points are earned by competing and participating in rallies and spirit weeks and accumulated by grade level.

“Pirate Points were created by Student Government to create competition among grade levels while promoting camaraderie,” said Student Government Student Board Member Ava Sison.

The current pirate points standing following the Beach Bash rally on Friday, April 18 are: Juniors with 1825 points, Seniors with 1550 points, Sophomores with 1325 points, and Freshmen with 800 points.

The grade level with the most pirate points by the end of the 2024-25 school year has the opportunity to have a pirate point picnic at Blackbird Park sponsored by Student Government.

Competitions are held throughout the year, and points are primarily earned through rallies and class chants. Rallies consist of a series of games and activities that requires equal participation from all grades with the winner gaining the most points. Some examples of these games include volleyball, basketball, guess the song, and more.

Student government representatives announced this week to junior advisory classes that juniors are ahead enough to win the picnic regardless of the results of the final contests. This is the second time juniors have ever won the competition. Student Government teacher Jennifer Hembree said, “It has only happened once before, and it’s definitely been well over five years since juniors won.”

Gania Rinwa, a junior, explained that the pirate events and competitions are “a fun way to bring everyone together and show off class spirit. As a junior, it feels great to be in a solid lead because all the hard work, planning, and energy we put in is paying off.”

As events are nearing an end, many seniors and juniors feel that competition has been heightened, and many seniors feel strongly about the idea of not winning the competition.

Current senior Ronika Sidhu said that she thinks it’s unfair for the juniors to win.

“They should just give it to us,” Sidhu said. “We have been waiting all four years since we were freshmen to have this picnic, and now it’s being taken away from us.”

Senior Andrew Le added, “This is completely unprecedented.”

The final chances for grade levels to earn pirate points are the school’s spirit week,April 28-May 2. The theme days will be Mickey Monday, Traffic Light Tuesday, White Lie Wednesday, Time After Time, and class chants on Friday.
