NP3 Student government is no longer relying on advisory announcements and Instagram to get their word out. For the 2024-25 school year they have joined the fifth most popular app in the world —TikTok.

The idea was suggested by student government officers because they thought short videos on TikTok would reach more people. Student government adviser Jen Hembree created the account and the account is run by communications officers who are appointed by Hembree.

“TikToks are made to match the current trends,” said Communication Officer Isabella Bravo.

The purpose of the TikTok account is to reach out to the student body in a new and vibrant way, which has seemed to be well received.

“We find that no matter how much info we put in student announcements or how many flyers we post, having a social media presence is something most high schoolers respond to and it’s a good way for us to stay connected and creative with our communication and advertising,” Hembree explained.

The TikTok account currently has 332 followers and more than 3,700 likes. Videos are made during class time by the communication officers and are reviewed by Hembree before being posted.

Additional safety and security measures are placed around the account, such as communications officers are tasked with monitoring responses and comments on posts, comments get deleted if they are not deemed appropriate.

The 23 videos on TikTok have also been cross posted on the student government Instagram account.

The effort to create a TikTok account was initiated by Hembree’s past students. The idea had been circulating, due to the popularity of the platform amongst students.

Towards the end of the 2023-24 school year, student leaders proposed creating a TikTok account to school administration. After gaining approval, the plan moved forward in August 2024.

“I trust the students with their judgement in operating the TikTok account, so I approved the suggestion without a second thought,” said NP3 Principal Melissa Mori.

The student government Advertising Committee primarily comes up with ideas for videos and “they often grab other class members to help complete their post,” said Hembree.

Haniyah Fareedi, a follower of the TikTok account, said, “it’s a great way for me to stay informed about what events are coming up in school since I use TikTok a lot and it’s convenient because Student Government videos pop up on my For You Page.”

Bravo said some feedback Student Government has received has been to “post more often and to be consistent in posting.”

Student Government’s goal is to post on TikTok every week on Tuesdays, but that has not been consistent. Videos to date have promoted events and provide information. The hope is to reach as many students as possible.
