Students have mixed feelings about conferences being virtual! Student led conferences are the week of 10/12/20 and a schedule change occurs during the week of student led conferences.
The Pacific Times conducted a survey asking about student opinions on student led conferences. More than 86% of the answers were from sophomores, 11.1% of the answers were from Juniors and the remaining 2.8% were from freshmen. No seniors took the survey.
Due to COVID-19, everybody has become familiar with distance learning. Despite this fact, many students did not expect for conferences to be virtual according to the survey.
Currently, all Np3 schools are still teaching virtually. There are no clear indications to when students will be back in schools.
When asked, “Are virtual student led conferences what you expected?” The answers were very diverse.
“I did not expect for student led conferences to happen virtually,” states a sophomore from NP3 High. “because our advisors are very diligent to tell our families any updates with our school/how we, the student, are doing so far grade wise.”
Advisory teachers are very good about giving families updates and teachers are uploading grades to infinite campus as fast as they can.
“I mean I expected them to be a zoom call, but I didn’t really expect to create Google slides for the student led conferences. I suppose it makes sense because it’s a good way to talk about our future and what we plan on doing after high school. It just wasn’t what I expected though.” states Kinsey Center, a sophomore at Np3 High.
A look at what students said. 13/30 students said they expected conferences to be virtual. 13/30 students said they did not expect conferences to be virtual. 4/30 students don’t know how they feel.
It was split 50/50 when students were asked if they expected a virtual student led conference .
Schedule Change
There is a schedule change occurring the week of conferences.
“The change in class times is only for the week of conferences which is October 12-16.” states Np3 High Principal Melissa Mori. “The class schedule for Monday and Tuesday is the same as usual. Most conferences will be held on Wednesday and there will not be live classes on that day. Thursday and Friday we will shorten classes by 15 minutes to allow for additional time in the afternoon to hold conferences. Student attendance is required at all conferences, so the conference time will count towards the missed advisory class on Wednesday.”

This is the schedule change Mori is referring to. Conferences will account for the missed advisory time.
