High school students may struggle to find volunteering opportunities during the pandemic.
Although school campuses remain closed, there are still ways students can serve their community.
One Aggie Network of the University of California, Davis shares that students may:
- Virtually tutor or mentor other students. This page provides additional information on virtual tutoring and mentorship opportunities in California.
- Make face masks using materials students already own and donate them to local organizations. Information on how to make safe and effective face masks can be found here. Students will have to do additional research to find organizations that accept face mask donations, which may include food banks and senior facilities.
- Write letters. Students can use online search engines to find people to connect with, or ways to connect with other high schoolers, hospital patients or someone else. This can help reduce social isolation felt by those who live alone.
- Donate blood. Blood donations are in high demand due to the pandemic. To find blood drives near them, students can refer to this page.
- Find food banks near them to donate at or volunteer.
- Pick up trash in local parks, neighborhoods, or other locations. Students can also organize trash cleanups to get others involved.
- Work with Meals on Wheels, a nonprofit organization, to deliver food to seniors. Students can find a Meals on Wheels near them and sign up to volunteer. (Students must be 18+ years old to volunteer.)
