Councilmember Harris Shares Homeless Plan

The issue of homelessness in Sacramento was discussed during the Gardenland Northgate Neighborhood Association meeting held last week on Feb. 11.

Details in a fact sheet composed by Sacramento Steps Forward show the amount of homeless people in Sacramento have increased over time.

Councilmember Jeff Harris shared updates with the Gardenland Northgate Neighborhood Association on steps the city council is taking to address this issue. Harris represents South Natomas, Gardenland and Northgate as well as the East Sacramento, River Park, Sacramento State, Point West, Downtown Railyards, and River District neighborhoods on the Sacramento City Council.

Harris said federal funding from the CARES Act has been used to buy 14 trailers intended to improve sanitation for the homeless. These trailers include toilets and showers.

Harris told the community group he thought these trailers could be placed at the state fairgrounds, but added that there was the possibility of placing “…one or two trailers at each campground site to be used all over the city.”

“To deal with homelessness, it takes two things…,” said Harris. One of these two things was, according to Harris, “compassion.”
