Worried about the safety of friends and family members, Kareem Rashid decided to offer a self-defense class to NP3 High students.
This class was part of Rashid’s senior project. His project is on the issue of human trafficking, specifically in Sacramento. According to The United States Department of Justice, human trafficking is “…modern-day slavery, [which] is a crime that involves compelling or coercing a person to provide labor or services…”.
Said Rashid, “My senior project is about human trafficking in Sacramento and what ways we can educate ourselves to prevent this type of issue.”
“I would often hear about encounters that made them [Rashid’s family members, friends, and peers] uncomfortable or that they were put in situations where they needed help and this made me want to take action and put something together,” Rashid added.
For his project, Rashid organized a class on Zoom during which students learned about self defense from Tracy’s Karate & Martial Arts Studios, located in Davis, California. The one-hour class was held on April 13.
NP3 student Nimita Lal also chose the topic of self defense for her senior project.
