Students Express Mixed Views on Using AI

The Pacific Times surveyed current students about the use of artificial intelligence, more commonly referred to as AI, and while some expressed concerns about using this technology for school assignments, others don’t feel it is an issue. 

Out of the 147 responses received, 61.9% of students reported having used AI at least once. For students who reported they had used AI before, when asked if it is ethical to use AI for school assignments, 30.8% answered that it depends on the situation while 61.5% answered that it was unethical to use AI for school assignments, and 7.7% answered that it was ethical.

NP3 to Host Summer AI Scholars Program

An Artificial Intelligence summer program taught by Stanford and MIT alumni is being hosted at NP3.

This summer, InspiritAI is having a program open to NP3 students, taking place from July 8 to July 19 only on weekdays. The sessions are from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Many may argue that Artificial Intelligence is unethical and creates dishonesty in student’s academic performance, though I argue that ethical use of AI can lead students to have a deeper understanding of concepts at a faster pace. Large language models have been in development for many years but only those with very powerful hardware were able to use them. With the advent of ChatGPT from OpenAI, the access to large language models was made as easy as visiting a website. Students were some of the first to capitalize on these new tools and used them to complete assignments. Critical thinking skills are the basis of living an adult life and without them it’s hard to say a person has matured. The use of AI by students to write for them is unethical. Although the use of AI makes it easier for students to write faster and better, it does not allow the students to develop their own thinking skills and takes away the responsibility for the student to learn the subject which are the goals of education.
